On Feb 15th, RentHelp’s own Haley P. was still showing the Burgh lots of love on the day after Valentine’s, by attending a public hearing proposing new legislation that could potentially help thousands of renters across the Commonwealth. House Bill 1769 would seal eviction filings statewide from the public view. Haley gave her testimony on how an eviction filing personally impacted her, but also answered questions regarding what she has experienced working as one of our Court Resource Navigators in Allegheny County.
“It was an honor to share my personal experience as someone impacted by a past eviction filing and to shed light on how public access to these records negatively impacts thousands of tenants in Pennsylvania,” Haley said when asked about the experience.
Adding to that, she said it was great to see state legislators taking an interest in how they can improve the lives of renters and their access to housing.
Although we fully support House Bill 1769 and the sealing of eviction filings, we do want to bring to light the importance of ensuring and protecting advocacy groups and organizations like RentHelp continue to have the ability to access file records. Without this access, we could lose the ability to keep helping thousands of families stay in their homes during a time of heightened Housing Crisis across the country that has already left millions of people unhoused.
