Eviction Prevention Matters

It is easy to take housing stability for granted when we have it. But imagine a tragedy strikes: a lost job, a loved one falls ill, or you’re in an accident. Suddenly your primary concern is keeping a roof over your family’s heads.

More than 70% of the 13,500 households that experience eviction in Allegheny County every year are below 30% of the area median income. This means a family of four is making less than $30,360 per year! Living paycheck to paycheck means normal setbacks in life become tragedies.

Evictions come with a high price tag. They cost families safety and security. They cost children educational and developmental progress (each disruptive move sets a child’s education back six months). they cost communities their cohesion, and evictions cost landlords an average of $6,000 per eviction!

Preventing an eviction costs less than $4,000 on average. Rehousing a family that has entered the homeless system costs more than $40,000. Eviction prevention protects our neighbors while saving valuable time and resources.
